Powerhouse Casting

Seeking men with a physical disability who use a wheelchair for mobility. Ages 16 to 30. Must be Hispanic or someone who could look Hispanic. We are also open to casting Caucasian guys with brown or black hair. Non-speaking role, no acting experience is required.

Pay is $3,000 each if selected.

This is a non-union TV commercial filming in Vancouver, but audition is in Toronto. Travel and accommodation will be provided.

Availability

Must be available for these dates:

  • (Tomorrow) Friday, October 14, 2016 – Downtown Toronto in early evening
  • October 23-25, 2016 – Shoot and travel in Vancouver

NCCP Wheelchair Basketball Competition Introduction Coaching Clinic

The OWSA, in partnership with the Coaches Association of Ontario and the City of Toronto are hosting an NCCP Wheelchair Basketball Competition Introduction coaching clinic.male wheelchair basketball coach wearing tie holding clipboard with female assistant coach talking to athletes at half-time

This course is open to any individuals interested in coaching wheelchair basketball at a community or competitive level. Coaches will learn how to instruct, observe, and correct skills in a combination of in-class and on-court settings. They will have the opportunity to practice planning and teaching sport-specific fundamental skills and concepts appropriate for athletes in the Learn to Train stage of the Long-Term Athlete Development pathway.

Competition Introduction is a 19-hour course scheduled over three days. Coaches must attend all three days in order to be credited for completion of the course.

The OWSA is looking to hire a Team Manager to work with our Junior Provincial Wheelchair Basketball team for the 2016-2017 season (with possibility of extension).

Travel and accommodation expenses at the 2017 Junior East Regional Championship will be covered.

Athlete Ambassadors Wanted!

Looking for Athlete Ambassadors!

Open Call for Athletes!

Are you passionate and enthusiastic about the sport(s) you play? Have you ever wanted to share that joy and teach others about wheelchair sports and the importance of accessibility and inclusion? Do you want to become more involved in your community? Become an OWSA Athlete Ambassador today!

The OWSA will be hosting three Athlete Ambassador training sessions in September for anyone interested in becoming an ambassador for wheelchair athletics, basketball, rugby, and tennis! Ambassadors attend ‘Have A Go’ Days and various community eventsmale wheelchair athlete talking to group of kids throughout the year with the OWSA to help run sport demos, teach others about wheelchair sports, tell their stories, and discuss the benefits of getting involved in sport and living an active, healthy lifestyle!

Any athlete wishing to become an OWSA Athlete Ambassador must attend one of the training sessions offered. Refreshments will be provided at each session and all Ambassadors will receive an OWSA t-shirt. Athletes must be over the age of 15 to participate.

Athletes are asked to register online in order to attend their desired session.

National Youth Forum on Accessibility Legislation

We are pleased to inform you that an application package is now available at the following address www.Canada.ca/Accessible-Canada for eligible youth interested in participating in a one-day Forum taking place in November 2016. The Forum is part of The Government of Canada’s consultation process on planned accessibility legislation and youth between the ages of 15-30 with a disability or with life experience, work experience or academic experience related to disability and accessibility are invited to apply.

Please note that the deadline for applications is September 15, 2016 and that applications will not be considered past that date.

Rogers Cup Have-A-Go Day

Come try out wheelchair tennis at the Rogers Cup! Tennis Canada National Coach Kai Schrameyer will be instructing at the Aviva Tennis Centre (1 Shoreham Drive, Toronto) July 27 from 2:30 pm- 4:00 pm. All ages and levels are welcome to join! Sport wheelchairs will also be provided upon request. To register, email btg@onpara.ca or call (416) 426-7131.

Beacham Summer Fun Day

A free and fun event in memory of Linda Beacham, the Team Ontario Manager at the Canada Games and a dedicated Cruisers volunteer and special needs advocate who sadly passed away last summer. This event is open to all participants with a physical disability aged 4-12, as well as their siblings. Fun games such as tag, red rover, parachute activities, floor hockey, and swimming will be enjoyed so make sure to head on down! The Beacham Summer Fun Day will take place Sunday, July 24 between 1:45 pm- 7:00 pm at the Cassie Campbell Community Centre (1050 Sandalwood Parkway West, Brampton). 2016 Birmingham Canadian Wheelchair Tennis Classic

This ITF 1 Series tournament is running from August 25-28, 2016 at the Ontario Racquet Club (884 Southdown Road, Mississauga). The Birmingham Classic is a national tournament that is generously supported by the Birmingham Family, who continue to support wheelchair tennis in Canada. Calling All Aspiring Coaches!

As part of the Coaches Association of Ontario’s Let’s Get Coaching program, we will be offering a Competition Introduction Wheelchair Basketball Coaching Course in Toronto, from December 2nd until December 4th! Registration will open in early October.

Bridging The Gap- Booking Now!

Bridging the Gap is our education and outreach program. This introductory sport program will give participants the opportunity to try wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby or wheelchair tennis first-hand. Our Bridging the Gap program travels to schools, rehabilitation centres, hospitals and other community events! If you or someone you know is looking to introduce people of all abilities to wheelchair sports this fall, than contact the OWSA! Our Coordinator will bring all the required equipment and will cater the program to different age groups and levels of ability. Our goal is to create awareness and allow people the opportunity to try out different wheelchair sports. We also have amazing athlete ambassadors that are happy to come out and share their knowledge and love of the sport. Silver and Bronze Finish for Ontario at Junior East Regionals

2016 Junior East Regional Championship Results

Congratulfull team photo of Team Ontario athletes posing with their silver and bronze medals after a tournamentations to our Team Ontario Junior athletes who competed at the Junior East Regional Championships in Charlottetown, PEI over the weekend of May 14-15.

The ten Team Ontario athletes split up into two squads of five players for this 3-on-3 tournament. They competed in the 9-point Division against two squads from Québec – Québec Bleu & Québec Blanc – while teams from New Brunswick, Québec, Nova Scotia (x2), and PEI competed in the Open Division.

Both Ontario teams returned with hardware from the event with Team Ontario 1 capturing a silver medal finish after a hard-fought 20-25 loss to Québec Bleu while Team Ontario 2 earned bronze with a 19-13 win over Québec Blanc.

The Ontario Wheelchair Sports Association would like to extend a sincere thank you to Wheelchair Basketball Canada and ParaSport & Recreation PEI for organizing and hosting a wonderful tournament! Thank you to all the officials, table crew staff, and other volunteers for assisting with the event!

Good luck at Junior East Regional Championships!

The OWSA would like to wish the best of luck to our Team Ontario junior athletes at the 2016 Junior East Regional Championships in Charlottetown, PEI. They will be competing from May 14-15 in a jam-packed 3-on-3 tournament featuring teams from Ontario, Québec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and PEI.

Both Team Ontario squads will be playing in the 9 Point division – ON1 will be coached by Team Ontario Junior Head Coach Kathy Ludwig while ON2 will be coached by Team Ontario Junior Assistant Coach Josh Davies.

A special mention goes out to coaches Aidyn Low, Jesse McNalley, and Chris Chandler who have helped prepare the athletes for this upcoming tournament!

Casting for Canadian Tire Jumpstart Foundation Commercial

Seeking 1x boy, 8-12 years old, with physical disability, able to play wheelchair basketball.

Audition – Saturday, May 14
Time: TBD
Location: Milestone Studio (400 Eastern Avenue, Toronto, M4M 2K9) – studio is wheelchair accessible.

Call Back – The call back will be held in-studio Tuesday, May 24 or Wednesday, May 25

Shoot – Boys auditioning should be available for the call-back and shoot date(s) June 2,3 or 4, 2016.

Remuneration – IF cast our principle boy will be paid $500 for the shoot day + $50 for a wardrobe call (prior to shoot). IF he makes it into the final edit of the spot and is recognizable and prominent he will be paid an additional $1,200 which would be a buyout for usage in all media for x3 years.

Joel Dembe to lead UTSC Spring Tennis Program

Thursday evenings from 6:00pm-8:00pm starting May 5th and running until June 23. All ages and abilities are welcome!

Participants can register online for the full 8-week program or single-session drop-ins.
