Funeral Service for Ken Thom
Leave a CommentOn September 24, 2017 in Cape Town, South Africa. Loving husband of Karen. Cherished father of Christopher and his wife Bonnie, Stephanie and her husband Nicolas and Curtis. Beloved grandpa of Riley, Alexis and Maleia (who were the center of Ken’s universe) and one yet to be born to Stephanie in January. Dear brother of Larry, Pearl, Phil and Jo.
Many of you will also be aware of Ken’s love of sport and especially his commitment to coaching Paralympic athletes where he coached Bermuda in the London Paralympics in 2012. Who will ever forget the sight of Ken in his pink Bermuda shorts at the opening ceremony?
Ken was a member of the Canadian Paralympic Committee and coached his son Curtis, who is a Canadian National wheelchair athlete at the 2016 games in Rio. Ken also had a great love of football, which he coached in Streetsville-Meadowvale for many years.
Visitation will be held on Sunday October 15, 2017 from 1-3 pm at St. John’s Dixie Cemetery & Crematorium, 737 Dundas St. E., Mississauga, Ontario. A Funeral Service will be held in the Chapel at St. John’s Dixie on Monday October 16, 2017 at 2pm, with visitation one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Ontario Wheelchair Sports Association 100 Sunrise Ave. Unit 101, Toronto, ON M4A 1B3 or the Cruisers Sports for the Physically Disabled 9-6975 Meadowvale Town Centre Circle, Suite 158, Mississauga, ON L5N 2V7. The Ontario Wheelchair Sports Community Mourns the Loss of Ken Thom
Leave a Comment
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our President, Ken Thom.
Ken was the head of the OWSA but he was also the heart and soul of the organization. A tireless and dedicated volunteer, Ken served on the board of directors for decades and was a passionate advocate for sport opportunities for athletes with disabilities.
As a high performance coach, Ken created a program that allowed athletes to reach their full potential. He coached athletes at many National Championships, World Championships, Parapan Am and Paralympic Games. In addition to his coaching commitments, Ken somehow found time to dedicate to our association. Whether it was attending meetings, writing policies or running to raise money for our association, all we had to do was ask and Ken would be there. We will never be able to fill the void left by his passing.
Anyone that knew him, knew that Ken was more than a coach. He was a mentor, teacher, role model, confidant and friend. Our condolences go out to Jessica, Isaiah, Austin and all the athletes that had the privilege of calling him, “Coach”.
Our thoughts are with Karen, Christopher, Stephanie and Curtis at this very difficult time.
