Wheelchair Basketball ‘Competition Introduction’ Coaching Course

The NCCP ‘Competition Introduction’ clinic is designed for coaches who wish to learn the skills and techniques needed to coach wheelchair basketball in an introductory competitive setting. There is no prerequisite to attend and is considered to be the entry level wheelchair basketball coaching course.

The focus of the course is to learn to coach the basic skills and tactics of wheelchair basketball required to support the competitive experience for athletes in the ‘Learn to Train’ stage of Long-Term Athlete Development pathway.

Coaches will:

  • Gain an understanding of the Long Term Athlete Development concept and model.
  • Learn how to teach fundamental wheelchair basketball movement skills and technical/tactical skills (movement skills such as starting/stopping/turning, technical skills of shooting, passing, ball handling and chair position, tactical skills such as picking and defense).
  • Learn how to develop an effective practice plan.
  • Gain an understanding of the ‘Making Ethical Decisions’ six-step process.

Prerequisite: None

Note: The Competition Introduction course is a 19-hour workshop, scheduled over three days, with on- and off-court teachings. Coaches must attend the entire duration of the course in order to be credited for completion.

  • Friday, September 27 – classroom (6:00pm – 9:00pm)
  • Saturday, September 28 – classroom & gym (8:30am – 8:00pm)
  • Sunday, September 29 – gym & classroom (8:30am – 2:30pm)

Registration

Registration Fee: $450
This will cover the cost of the facility rental, course materials & instruction, and coach candidates’ meals. The coach evaluation fee is also covered should a coach look to complete their certification within two years of the course. Candidates will be responsible for covering the cost of their own accommodations, transportation, and parking.

NCCP #:
In order to register for this course and receive credit for attendance/completion, coach candidates will need to have a NCCP number. If you do not yet have a NCCP number, simply register in ‘The Locker’ through the Coaching Association of Canada. This can easily be done by visiting https://thelocker.coach.ca/account/login?mode=login

Deadline:
Coach candidates are required to complete their registration online by Wednesday, September 25, 2019.

Financial Assistance: The Coaches Association of Ontario provides Coach Bursaries for Ontario residents for up to 60% of course registration fees (in-person workshop training) to a maximum of $300 per individual. Please visit the CAO’s website for more information or to apply for the Bursary Program.
